We must emphasize that we are not in a position to give you accurate immigration advice, so please check the British Home office website regularly for updates and for accurate information on immigration and work permit matters. Here is a link to the latest information we are aware of for Bulgarian and Romanian citizens: http://www.workingintheuk.gov.uk/working_in_the_uk/en/homepage/news/announcements/2.html You might also be aware that since the last accession the jobs market for doctors have changed dramatically in the UK and some hospitals get up to 1000 applications per job. This means that a doctor should be 100% sure that they have permission to work from the British Home office (see link above) and have a job offer BEFORE resigning his/her current job. Where a doctor needs a work permit, an employer must show that a genuine vacancy exists which cannot be filled with a resident worker before they offer a job and apply for a work permit for someone. This is unlikely to happen in most instances as most vacancies are now easily filled and due to budgetary restriction hospitals are reluctant to pay for expensive work permits. The alternative is to go through the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP). New HSMP criteria are being implemented, and as we understand it, the revised scheme will be operational from 5 December 2006. The HSMP is not a cheap option, as the person applying for the visa has to pay for it. Please see http://www.workingintheuk.gov.uk/working_in_the_uk/en/homepage/schemes_and_programmes/hsmp.html In this case, the work permit is issued to the doctor and not to an employer, which gives you more freedom than an ordinary work permit. This does not, however, guarantee you a job. |
